VE Day - 80th Anniversary

On 8 May 2025, Highworth marked the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day, with all the peoples, families and communities of our great nation coming together to unite and celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of Word War II in Europe. To remember not only that so many millions paid the ultimate sacrifice to peace but that so many more suffered hunger and hardship to keep the home fires burning. Highworth was proud to join in this shared moment of celebration.

Highworth embraced the moment, many dressing up in 1940's style and coming to enjoy this free event for all the family. Full size replicas, including a spitfire and other military vehicles, were on display on the Market Square.

Highworth remembers ...
those who fought for us.
At Visit Highworth ...
... we showed local children ...
just what rationing meant!
We remembered ...
... those fought in the skies ...
to keep our Town safe.
We gathered to witness ...
... the lighting of our beacon.

At 9.30 hundreds gathered in the Market Square to join with communities up and down the country in the Lighting of Our Beacon. We stood together at the heart of our little Town and remembered those who fought to keep us safe and those who kept the home fires burning to see us emerge at last from the darkness of war into the light of peace and freedom!
